We at Docunight are deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of Dariush Mehrjui, one of the most celebrated Iranian directors, and his wife and screenwriting partner, Vahideh Mohammadifar.

Known as one of the auteurs of Iranian New Wave cinema, Mehrjui’s rich oeuvre is comprised of elegant, philosophical filmmaking, in which he rigorously unpacks questions concerning trauma, fear, love, estrangement, and the midlife crisis.

From his earliest films, such as The Cow and The Cycle, to his later ones, like The Pear Tree, The Tenants, Hamoun, Pari , and The Lady, Mehrjui reaffirmed his unyielding commitment to extraordinary filmmaking and his talent for immersive storytelling about the different corners and spaces of his native country, Iran.

Mehrjui’s powerful films will always be the embodiment of truly great cinema.

In their memory, Docunight is featuring a free screening of Mani Haghighi’s Mehrjui: The Forty-Year Report.
