By pairing his own voice over with close-ups of his father’s belongings, like an old cellphone, a comb, his fragrance, clothes, bags, shoes, and prayer beads, Behbahani shows how death makes ordinary things special. He subsequently traps us in an often unexplored zone of loss and grief and invites us to re-examine every aspect of life.

The Most Beautiful Country in the World centers on a group of immigrants in Austria who confront the country’s demanding administrative labyrinths in order to achieve legal status and residence. Their anxiety and ongoing attempts to assimilate into a new culture and learn the language show just how difficult it is to live in a diaspora. Seemingly ordinary aspects of everyday life become essential, from German lessons, to boxing at the gym, to a visit to the Christmas market, to a search for an apartment or a job. In this new life, traditions from the immigrants’ homelands blend with Western realities. This docudrama tackles irrefutably relevant global issues, highlighting the everyday lives of the individuals who live on the margins of society, who are often victims of inequality.
