6 Do’s & Don’ts:

Your 2023 College & Grad School Application Essays

DO: Get Personal

Your writing is your interview and the chance to get past your G.P.A. and test scores. Even with a strong GPA, your personal statement and supplemental questions are often the only opportunities you have to convey to your application reader who you are and why they should choose you. We have each been given our unique family history, environment, challenges, and opportunities. These are the things that have shaped us into who we are. I have found that outside support is incredibly helpful in enabling us to identify our own gifts, strengths, and stories.

DO: Stay Humble

The way we share our accomplishments, leadership positions, and successes is essential. Make sure that this is done with grace and complete humility.

DO: Get Out of Your Head

It is important to get your initial ideas out of your head and onto paper, as ridiculous as they may be. Do not judge them- just write. This is a significant move in getting the ball rolling and stepping into action.

DON’T: Be a Victim | DO: Keep It Positive

Many people have overcome significant life challenges that they choose to share in their writing. The overall tone of your writing should convey positivity and resilience.

DON’T: Rely on CHAT GPT/AI

While the benefits provided by resources like CHAT GPT can be a great tool, it is not a replacement for your personal efforts. Moreover, I anticipate colleges will begin to implement safeguards and ways to detect AI usage to ensure each applicant’s integrity.

DO: Get Personalized Support

I do strongly encourage getting feedback on your essays to make sure you are on the right track and that your writing will set you up for success. Beware of companies that ask you to make a large commitment at the forefront only to receive generic feedback or reel you into signing up for services that you don’t need.

Who am I: I am an attorney with a passion for helping students get into their dream school. My goal is to get you results by enhancing the writing portion of your application.

Who do I work with ? I work directly with high school students, transfer students, and prospective graduate school students to ensure that your writing is the best reflection of who you are and what you can bring to the table. I especially love working with students who are motivated and excited to take the next step in their life.
