Jiroft Civilization: one of the oldest in the world
The history of Jiroft dates back to about 5,000 years ago when a Bronze Age civilization, which has come to be known as the Jiroft Civilization, inhabited this area. Traces of this civilization have been found at the Twin Konar Sandal Mounds where archaeologists unearthed clay and stone tablets with basic characters believed to be the origin of the Elamite writing system as well as a Ziggurat-like temple. Archeologists say further studies of Konar Sandal artifacts will reveal Jiroft and not Mesopotamia as the birthplace of the oldest civilization of the Eastern World.

In this episode, we’ll take a look at the relatively recent discovery of the Jiroft civilization and what it could mean for the field of archaeology and our understanding of the ancient Near East.
