A Journey into Zero Space is an experimental, autobiographical documentary that closely explores the notions of home, memory, immigration, and authority while reflecting on both historical and current events. Shot mostly in back and white, and using self-projection and various montage techniques, this film comments on the bleak and hopeless nature of an immigrant’s life in a land far from home: an existence found somewhere between silence and noise, war and peace, sound and image, and belonging and (un)belonging.
In his conceptual method, Hilmandi unravels fragments of immigrants’ lives, criticizes geographical borders, and, by using voice-over as a means of reflection, he reveals the haunting and untold stories of war and displacement.
