Sahar Mosayebi’s Platform, made in 2021, follows three Iranian sisters from the small town of Semirom as they arduously train to become wushu champions. A sense of warmth pervades the film, and a feeling of uneasy and humane compassion enriches the entire narrative while revealing an unexpected atmosphere of pain. The sisters are driven by competitive ambition, but each of them has a different personality. Their athleticism grew from a life of poverty and was honed by a father who treated them like boys. This documentary focuses on the personal lives of these sisters and sheds light on the tension between the modesty demanded of women by state and society and the fierceness and determination it takes to compete at an elite level. |
