The most common cause of hair loss

The most common cause of hair loss in both men and women is Genetic Androgenic Alopecia. It is hereditary and progressive. Due to its progressive nature any hair treatment option should be offered considering future hair loss, in addition if the hair loss is at the initial phases then hair transplant procedure may not be a viable option.

A great hair restoration specialist would consider all options and offer a comprehensive approach. In many cases specially in women, a medical hair treatment option is initially recommended before moving on more aggressive treatment. Although there are no miracle cures for hair loss, there are some options that may help specially in initial phases of hair loss, in female hair loss and in preventive hair loss cases.

These options should be discussed with a hair restoration specialist. PRP therapy has gained popularity as a non surgical treatment option for men and women in the initial stages of hair loss. PRP is a concentration derived from clients’ own blood, It has growth factors that stimulate hair growth when injected into the scalp. Usually the Doctor draws the patient’s own blood and runs it through a machine to separate the platelets, and then injects the plasma cells into the thinning hair. It is a half hour procedure and there is no down time. However, not all PRP is created equal. When it comes to stopping hair loss, a 5-10 times concentration of platelets is best. Depending on the intended use, PRP may or may not contain red or white blood cells, However it does contain a concentration of platelets that is higher than a patient’s own blood.

Once in the scalp, PRP growth factors begin to degrade so any benefit to thinning is short lived, therefore this requires continuous treatments of the PRP injections. As a rule most doctors recommend that this is repeated 3-4 months a year to maintain the benefits. It is suggested that the combination of ACell and PRP provide a continuous supply of growth factors to the native hair follicles for several months.

In some cases where the patient does not want to use his/her blood or it is hard to draw the blood, Dr. Meshkin may recommend using ACELL injections only. ACell is a protein matrix that when injected into the scalp recruits the body’s own intrinsic growth factors and healing proteins over a period of several months. It is suggested that the combination of ACell and PRP provide a continuous supply of growth factors to the native hair follicles for several months. A thorough hair loss evaluation is necessary to find out if PRP or ACell is an effective hair treatment option for an individual’s hair loss. At the initial hair restoration consultation, a hair transplant specialist can evaluate the degree of hair loss and determine if PRP or ACell is a proper hair restoration treatment option.

Although there are no miracle cures for hair loss, there are some FDA approved hair products and medications that may also help. These products and their effects should be discussed with hair restoration specialists before considering using them. Some of the FDA approved products include Finasteride, and Topical Minoxidil. At Meshkin Medial we offer a special formulated hair solution to increase hair growth and slow down hair loss. This solution contains FDA approved medication and is specially mixed at pharmacy to give added benefit for men and women who suffer from hair loss.
