California Is Home To One Of The World’s Most Romantic Destinations, And The Most Scenic Coastline In The U.S.

From internationally acclaimed upscale restaurants to amusement parks and horseback rides, California has no shortage of ways to celebrate love. So much so that National Geographic included the Golden State in its latest book, The World’s Most Romantic Destinations, which showcases top spots for couples. The book explores destinations ranging from the chic French Riviera to the ancient Yunnan province in China… and even features this beloved Californian gem on the Pacific coast.

This 90-mile stretch along the recently reopened, iconic Highway 1, better known as Big Sur, made the list for plenty of reasons, including its dreamy hiking trails and epic views. One of the most outstanding places to visit is Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.

The main attraction? Without a doubt, McWay Falls. A famous 80-foot waterfall that’s one of the few in the world to drop directly onto the sand. While you can’t hike down to explore it up close, the overlook alone offers a breathtaking view.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park (just 10 miles north) is a lush inland escape often nicknamed a “mini Yosemite” for its dense groves of towering ancient redwoods and scenic river canyon. Centered on the Big Sur River, the park lets visitors hike through mixed forests of oak, sycamore, cottonwood, and maple, and offers more than eight miles of trails.

Garrapata State Park, located about 37 miles further north, is widely considered the best beach in Big Sur. Though it’s relatively small, stretching only about two miles, it’s one of the easiest places in the region to walk down to the ocean and watch for sea otters, seals, sea lions, and migrating gray whales right from shore.

Beyond being ranked among the most romantic destinations in the world, Big Sur is also considered the most scenic coastline in the country. According to a UCLA environmental study, “Big Sur is one of the most dramatic coastlines in the world” and also “the longest and most scenic stretch of undeveloped coastline in the continental United States.”
