A Slice of Ralph Lauren’s East Coast Just Opened in This Small California Beach Town

New Redondo Beach restaurant Montauk combines coastal style, warm hospitality, and the designer’s timeless fashion.

Known for its landmark pier, annual BeachLife concert, and expansive harbor, Redondo Beach, California now boasts a sophisticated new restaurant, Montauk, with decor inspired by the classic style of Ralph Lauren. Founder Lavae McClinnahan has admired the designer for decades, proudly wearing wardrobe pieces he has collected over the years.

McClinnahan worked closely with Ralph Lauren Home for his restaurant’s interior design and accessories, which include stitched leather and brass sconces, stately table lamps, and rich colors. Deep navy blue and burgundy fabrics cover the walls, and paintings of seascapes and sailboats evoke the East Coast town of the restaurant’s name. “We want Montauk to feel like home — comfortable and welcoming,” McClinnahan told T+L. “And Ralph Lauren’s clothing is part of my lifestyle, so it had to be reflected in my restaurant’s design.”

Custom-designed uniforms for his staff are from Ralph Lauren, combining McClinnahan’s favorites from a variety of offerings. “The servers will wear mid-silk Ralph Lauren ties from the Oak Bluffs collection in wine, navy, and gold, along with the striped Oxford shirt. Managers will wear the navy blue blazer,” he said. McClinnahan is invariably clad in one of his Ralph Lauren blazers, sweaters, or suits.

With the restaurant now open, the relationship continues as deliveries of art and additional decorative pieces are anticipated. A shipment of Ralph Lauren holiday candles arrived recently, purchased as special gifts for guests. “We’ll have some Ralph Lauren model cars to display, probably his green Jaguar.” The company produces 1:8 scale replicas of Lauren’s vehicles in limited-edition runs.

Future plans include a “Made to Measure” event with Ralph Lauren’s tailors onsite in the restaurant’s jazz lounge, where a dressing room, fabric samples, and clothing designs will be set up for shoppers. There will be wine tastings and intimate jazz performances in the “Den.” Also in the development stage, a supper club in Charlotte, North Carolina is McClinnahan’s next project. “I’m working with Ralph Lauren Home on the new location. You’ll see another style of lamp there, but also from their collection. There will be more of the corduroy wall coverings from Phillip Jeffries as well.”

The commitment to luxury carries over from the decor to the extensive wine list, where guests can choose wines from France and Italy in addition to domestic vintages. Tableside caviar service, steak tartare, and Oysters Rockefeller are menu options along with seafood, pasta, steak, and duck breast, for a dining experience perfectly in tune with the designer surroundings.
