Taller Bula is a Southern California based Puerto Rican Bomba workshop. Bomba was born in Africa of Congolese roots and was developed and organized in Puerto Rico. Taller Bula seeks to create space for the development and preservation of this hundreds of year old cultural treasure. Sharing bomba since 2018, Taller Bula has held weekly bomba workshops, lectured at several universities (UCLA, UCSB, UCI) and performed at Skirball Center, Santa Ana’s Noche de Altares, UCR Latinx Graduation, and Segerstrom Theatre. Taller Bula’s director, Hector Luis Rivera has been recently nominated to represent the Puerto Rican diaspora in a national Puerto Rican bomba event where three of his original bomba songs will be sung. Thousands of miles away from its roots, bomba is alive and thriving in Southern California.
“Bomba is freedom and structure,
community and ancestry,
sensuality and modesty,
ego and humility,
tradition and innovation.”
