Fidan Short Film Selection

This weekend on Docunight, we present three prominent short documentaries of the 2010s (1390s), selected by Fidan, a website specialising in short films.

The selection was based on a review of more than 400 shorts films. Fidan critics describe the process as an historical journey, an effort to rediscover and revive forgotten films and an attempt to understand and analyse them, both in their own context and also through the passage of time.

After working abroad for several years, a filmmaker returns to his family home in Shiraz, Iran to make a film for the woman he loves. His exploration of his feelings and of the cross-cultural and geographical barriers to pursuing this relationship eventually spark introspections among members of his family, as they express their emotions to one another in new ways in front of the camera.

Swathed from head to toe in black, a woman is breaking stones out of a rock wall using a crowbar and her bare hands. In a stone cave dwelling they built themselves, she tends to her elderly husband before returning the next day to the never-ending work. Her daily routine resembles the torment of Sisyphus – a dusty chore she is doomed to repeat forever.
