ROSH HASHANAH is the Jewish New Year. It takes place on the first day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei (September or October). This marks the beginning of a 10-day period of prayer, self-examination and repentance. This period is known as the Jewish High Holy Days. There are also several holiday rituals observed at home. Customs include: sounding of the shofar, eating a round challah, and eating apples and honey to represent a sweet New Year. Many Iranian Jewish families celebrate Rosh Hashanah with a big family celebration meal called a seder.
